A Retro-Inspired Bowling Alley Engagement Session in Uptown Minneapolis
I’ve become increasingly fond of engagement sessions that revolve around an activity or shared experience rather than just a location. Not only do they feel more personal, but they also help ease that awkward “what do I do with my hands?” feeling that so many couples worry about. When there’s something to do, the moments unfold naturally and that’s where the magic really happens.
So, when Natalie and Brett reached out with the idea of taking their engagement photos at a vintage bowling alley, I was instantly obsessed. It felt playful, nostalgic and full of story, which is everything I love about engagement sessions.

Natalie and Brett are high school sweethearts, which is already incredibly sweet. The choice of location made their story even more meaningful. Brett was on the bowling team in high school and Natalie spent countless hours watching him compete. Long before wedding plans or engagement photos, bowling was already part of their relationship. Choosing a bowling alley was not just fun, it was deeply personal.

They knew right away that Bryant Lake Bowl & Theater in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis was the perfect fit. They had spent plenty of date nights there over the years and its vintage charm, warm lighting and iconic neon sign felt like a natural extension of their story.
Photographing inside a local business can sometimes be tricky, but the team at Bryant Lake Bowl & Theater was incredibly kind and welcoming. They generously allowed us to photograph during business hours, which made the session feel even more alive and authentic.

The day of the session arrived cold and rainy, classic March in Minnesota, but we were thankful from the start that we had planned for an indoor location. We began by taking a few photos in the theater area, then ordered drinks at the bar for Natalie and Brett while we waited for a lane to open. Once we had one, we bowled a few frames, laughed a lot and captured moments as curious onlookers watched nearby.
Since it was a busy Saturday, we decided to step outside for a few photos beneath the glowing neon sign. Even in the rain, Natalie and Brett were total troopers and those final images ended up being some of my favorites.
This session is one I will always remember, not just because of the setting, but because it felt so them. It is easily one of my favorite engagement sessions of 2025 and a perfect example of how meaningful locations and shared experiences can turn photos into something truly special.
